Statistical Highlights 3rd match: Zimbabwe v Kenya at Taunton, 15-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1445th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 161st in World Cup history (including the original abandoned match between these two teams at Patna in 1996).

This match was Zimbabwe's 118th and Kenya's 26th in LOIs.

This match was the 10th between the two sides in LOIs, and the third meeting in the WC between the two sides.

This match was Zimbabwe's 27th and Kenya's 7th in the WC.

The County Ground at Taunton (Somerset) was hosting its only second LOI match. The last match was played way back during the 1983 World Cup when England met Sri Lanka on 11-6-1983.

Jimmy Kamande became the 20th player to appear for Kenya in LOIs.

By a strange coincidence, both the umpires Dave Cowie from New Zealand and Javed Akhtar from Pakistan were officiating in their 36th LOI match.

The first wicket partnership of 62 runs between Kennedy Otieno and Ravindu Shah was Kenya's best against Zimbabwe. It surpasses the previous best of 54 between the same pair made recently at Dhaka on 19-3-1999. It also betters Kenya's best in the WC for the first wicket. Dipak Chudasama and Otieno had put on 47 against Sri Lanka at Kandy on 6-3-1996.

When he caught Kenyan Steve Tikolo, Andy Flower completed his 100th dismissal (76ct+24st) in his 106th match. He becomes the first Zimbabwean and 11th keeper in LOI history to do so.

Alpesh Vadher's 54 makes him the only second Kenyan after Steve Tikolo (65 v India at Cuttack, 1996) to do so on WC debut. It was incidentally, his highest LOI score bettering his previous best of 42* against Bangladesh at Nairobi (Aga) on 15-10-1997. The 84 run partnership between Maurice Odumbe and Vadher was Kenya's all-time best for the fifth wicket in LOIs. It obliterates the previous best of 82 runs between Otieno and Hitesh Modi against India at Calcutta on 31-5-1998.

Neil Johnson (4-42) became the third Zimbabwean bowler to take four wickets on WC debut. Duncan Fletcher (4-42) against Australia at Nottingham in 1983 and Paul Strang (4-40) against West Indies at Hyderabad (I) in 1996 are the others to do so.

The partnership of 81 runs between Neil Johnson and Grant Flower was Zimbabwe's best for the first wicket in a WC match. The previous best being 79 between Andy Flower and Ali Shah against India at Hamilton in the 1992 WC.

Neil Johnson (4-42 & 59) became the only third Zimbabwean all-rounder to take four wickets and score a fifty in LOIs. The others being Fletcher (69* & 4-42, v Australia at Nottingham on 9-6-83) and Gary Crocker (50 & 4-26, v India at Harare on 25-10-1992). Incidentally, Johnson became the 15th all-rounder in LOI history to achieve this rare all-round feat.

The 66 run partnership between Andy Flower and Alistair Campbell was Zimbabwe's best against Kenya for the fifth wicket. They bettered the unbeaten 64 runs between Campbell and Craig Wishart at Nairobi on 12-10-1997.

Zimbabwe has now beaten Kenya in the last nine matches.

It was Zimbabwe's sixth consecutive victory in LOIs, which equals its best winning sequence from 11-10-1997 to 19-10-1997 during the Kenya three-nation tournament.

Neil Johnson has now won three Man of the match awards in just 15 matches.
