Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1478th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 194th in World Cup history.

This match was South Africa's 171st and New Zealand's 330th in LOIs.

This match was outh Africa's 22nd and New Zealand's 42nd in the WC.

It was their 20th meeting in LOIs and their 3rd in the WC.

This match was the 25th LOI and the 10th in the WC to be played at this venue.

This venue had hosted the England-India WC encounter on 29-5-1999.

Gary Kirsten (82) playing in his 13th match, on 73 became the highest scorer for South Africa in WC. He crossed the aggreagate of 571 runs by Andrew Hudson in 12 matches. He now has an aggregate of 581 runs in the WC.

At the same time he also reached his 4000th run when on 77. He was playing in his 110th match and innings. He becomes the only second South African, after Hansie Cronje and 33rd batsman in LOI history to do so.

The first wicket partnership of 176 between Kirsten and Herschelle Gibbs surpassed the following records:
on 42, they bettered the previous highest partnership for the first wicket in the WC for South Africa against New Zealand (the previous best was 41 runs between Steve Palframan and Gary Kirsten at Faisalabad in 1996)
on 80, they bettered the previous highest partnership for any wicket in the WC for South Africa against New Zealand (the previous best was 79 runs for the 4th wicket between Peter Kirsten and Dave Richardson at Auckland in 1992)
on 101, they bettered the previous highest partnership for the first wicket wicket for South Africa against New Zealand in LOIs (the previous best was the 100 runs between Gary Kirsten and Lance Klusener at Brisbane in 9-1-1998)
on 137, they bettered the previous highest partnership for the first wicket in the WC against New Zealand (the previous best was the 136 run partnership for the fourth wicket between the Indians Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikkanth at Nagpur in 1987 WC).
on 148, they bettered the previous highest partnership for any wicket in the WC against New Zealand (the previous best was the unbeaten 147 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Pakistanis Zaheer Abbas and Imran Khan at Nottingham in the 1983 WC).
on 150, they bettered the previous highest partnership for any wicket for South Africa against New Zealand (the previous highest was the 149 between Dave Callaghan and Cronje for the 2nd wicket at Centurion on 11-12-1994).
the partnership however fell short of the highest partnership for the first wicket in the WC. The other two larger partnerships being: the 186 run partnership between the South African pair Kirsten and Hudson against Holland at Rawalpindi in 1996 and the 182 between the Australians Alan Turner and Rick McCosker against Sri Lanka at The Oval in 1975.

The 91 by Gibbs was the highest by a South African against New Zealand in the WC. The previous best was the 90 by Peter Kirsten at Auckland in the 1992 WC.

Klusener now holds a new LOI record. At the end of his innings, he has taken his tally of runs to exactly 400 before being dismissed for the first time in the last ten innings. He obliterates the previous record which was held by Pakistani Javed Miandad who from 20-9-1982 to 9-6-1983 had aggregated 398 runs before being dismissed. Miandad's scores were: 31*, 61*, 106*, 3*, 119*, 6* and 72. Klusener's scores from 20-2-1999 were: 103*, 35*, 13*, 35*, 12*, 52*, 48*, 52*, 46* and 4. Incidentally, Klusener was dismissed for the first time in this WC after scoring 214 runs.

New Zealand's Geoff Allott's wicket of Gibbs was his 19th of this tournament. This makes him the highest wicket taker in a single WC edition. The previous record holders with 18 wickets each were: India's Roger Binny in 1983, Australia's Craig McDermott in 1987 and Pakistan's Wasim Akram in 1992.

Allott also bettered New Zealand's best by a bowler in any LOI series/tournament. Chris Pringle during the 1990-91 B&H WSC had taken 18 wickets in 10 matches.

Chris Cairns' catch of Daryll Cullinan was his 12th in the WC. He equals the WC record of most catches held by five other fielders: West Indian Clive Lloyd and Desmond Haynes, Indians Kapil Dev and Anil Kumble and Englishman Graeme Hick.

The 24 runs (2116616 - the first six by Cronje was of a no-ball) by Jacques Kallis and Hansie Cronje from an over from Cairns was the maximum scored in the WC by any batsmen. The following bowlers: Martin Crowe (NZ), Vinothan John (SL), Ravi Ratnayeke (SL) and Sachin Tendulkar (Ind) have conceded 23 runs of an over in the WC.

Cronje's 39 off just 22 balls is one the fastest WC innings played by a South African batsman in terms of strike-rate, which was 177.27 runs per 100 balls.

The partnership of 54 runs between Kallis and Cronje was South Africa's best against New Zealand for the fifth wicket in LOIs. The previous best was the unbroken 48 runs between Cronje and Klusener at Wellington on 30-3-1999.

The wicket of Matt Horne was Kallis' 50th of his career. He becomes the 9th South African and the 107th bowler in LOI history to do so. Incidentally, by doing so in his 72nd match, he took the maximum matches for a South African to achieve this landmark. The previous record was held by Cronje who needed 70 matches to reach his 50th wicket.

Kallis also becomes the 34th player to do the all-rounder's double of 1000-plus runs and 50-plus wickets in LOIs. Only three other South African (Klusener, Pollock and Cronje) have achieved this.

Kallis is now the 24th player to score 2000-plus runs and take 50-plus wickets in LOIs. Cronje is the only other South African to do so.

The partnership of 59 runs between Craig McMillan and Stephen Fleming was New Zealand's best for the 3rd wicket against South Africa in the WC surpassing the previous best of 24 runs between Andrew Jones and Ian Smith at Auckland in the 1992 WC.

Fleming (42) when on 42 became the fourth New Zealander and 55th batsmen in LOIs to reach 3000 runs. He was playing in his 107th match and 104th innings.

The partnership of 37 runs between Roger Twose and Cairns was New Zealand's best for the 5th wicket against South Africa in the WC surpassing the previous best of 31 runs between Fleming and Adam Parore at Faisalabad in the 1996 WC.

Kallis won his 10th man of the match award. It was his second in the WC. He had won an award in South Africa's first game against India at Hove on 15-5-1999.
