1996WILL'S WORLD CUP 1996 - A STATISTICAL SURVEY

Mohandas Menon

1996 continued the trend, begun in 1983 by India, and reinforced by Australia in 1987 and Pakistan in 1992, of the underdogs winning the premier tournament.

1996 also saw organisation take another leap forward, with three countries -- India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- joining hands to stage the World Cup.

Unlike past World Cups, this one was dominated entirely by the batsmen, with bowlers being reduced pretty much to fetch and carry men. The strategy of going for broke in the early overs -- practised in an amateurish fashion by Krish Srikkanth in 1983, refined by Kiwi skipper Martin Crowe through the bat of Mark Greatbatch in 1992, was elevated to a fine art by the Lankan openers Sanath Jayasuriya and Romesh Kaluwitharana, who in this tournament redefined the grammer of one day cricket.

In a series of tables, we present the tale of the 1996 Cup, as numbers tell it.
