Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Wednesday said coach Greg Chappell could not be blamed for the below par performance of India in the World Cup.
"At the end of the day it is the players who have to go in the middle and play as a whole unit and win the match," Azhar told reporters in Ahmedabad.
"It is very sad that Indian team lost in the first round, which should not have happened. But, sometimes such things happen and we have to accept it," he said.
Azhar also said the team composition for the mega event "was not right" but did not elaborate on what was wrong in it.
Asked whether senior players should be in the team or not, he said it was for the selectors to decide and he could not comment on it.
Azharuddin was in Ahmedabad for announcing the setting up of the country's biggest indoor stadium which will be built at Koba village in Gandhinagar district.
