The Cricket Board will start the process of carrying out "drastic changes" in the Indian team only after receiving the detailed reports on the disastrous World Cup campaign by the manager and the coach.
The BCCI had promised to take drastic measures in the wake of the team's shocking exit from the World Cup and will soon call a special meeting not only to discuss the debacle, but also to draw up a future course of action.
"We are waiting for the report of the manager Sanjay Jagdale and coach Greg Chappell before starting the process.
We want to know the reasons for the poor performance from them," a top BCCI official said.
The shock exit from the showpiece event has put a question mark on the continuance of Chappell as the coach and Rahul Dravid as the team's captain, but the BCCI is not willing to discuss the issue yet.
Chappell's contract was till the World Cup and with the team failing to reach the Super Eight stage, speculation is rife that the former Australian captain may not get an extension.
"These are all media speculation. It is a little premature to talk about it. As far as the the BCCI is concerned, we will first discuss the reports. Decisions will be taken only after that," BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla said.
Another BCCI official said board president Sharad Pawar will decide the date for the meeting where the selectors would also be asked to attend and give their views.
"Obviously we are aware that the performance has led to extreme disappointment and anger among cricket fans. The team had a lot of experience, but it could still not perform. All these things would be taken into account," the official said.
Reacting to India's dismal World Cup show, Pawar had spoken about giving more opportunities to youngsters, triggering speculation that it could be the end of the road for some of the seniors in the team.
BCCI sources said that if Chappell was sacked as the coach, it was likely that an interim coach would be appointed for the Indian team's tour of Bangladesh in May.
The Indians are scheduled to play three one-dayers and two Tests during their tour of Bangladesh from May 10 to 29.
"In such a scenario, there is a possibility that we could have an interim coach for that tour. The process of having a foreign coach takes some time," the sources said.
The names of Sandeep Patil, Mohinder Amarnath and Anshuman Gaekwad have been doing the rounds for the post of interim coach, but the sources said it was "premature" to talk about a replacement at this stage.
While Gaekwad had been the coach of the national team in the past, Patil was at the helm for a brief period in 1996 before he was sacked.
Amarnath was among the three candidates shortlisted by the board before selecting Chappell for the post in May 2005.
