Russian forces killed close aide of Osama bin Laden and dreaded Chechen warlord Emir Khattab last month.
Born in Jordan, Khattab, 32, was said to be behind most of the major terrorist acts in Chechnya.
Russian security agency FSB killed him in a special operation, local radio Mayak reported.
Though the Kremlin and FSB confirmed the report, they did not disclose details of the operation.
The radio said Khattab was in control of the massive funds channelled into Chechnya by bin Laden and his Al Qaeda terrorist network to establish a Taliban-type fundamentalist regime in the Caucasus.
According to Russian media reports, Khattab was born into a rich Jordanian family and after completing schooling in the United States had gone to Afghanistan where he came in contact with bin Laden.
Khattab had trained terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan, they said.
Before coming to Chechnya in 1995 to join the separatist forces fighting against Russian rule, he had fought in the civil war in Tajikistan in early 1990s. In Chechnya, he became known for his inhuman treatment and torture of prisoners.
