Al-Qaeda claims responsibility
for September 11 attacks

A spokesman for Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network claimed responsibility for the September 11 attacks on the United States in a videotape aired by a Saudi-owned television network on Wednesday.

"We were able to hit the head of impiety on its own turf," Suleiman Abu Ghaith said in the tape.

"God ordered us to terrorise the infidels, and we terrorised the infidels," he said.

"We did what God the almighty ordered us to do. He ordered us to aid the oppressed and we aided the oppressed. God the almighty ordered us to fight the commanders of infidels, and we fought the commanders of infidels.

"We responded to the call of the oppressed in Palestine, Chechnya and everywhere," Abu Ghaith said.

His remarks amounted to the first direct claim of responsibility by Al Qaeda for the suicide attacks on New York and Washington.
