Pakistani envoy to Canada dies in accident

Ajit Jain in Toronto

Pakistani High Commissioner to Canada Tariq Altaf, 55, died on Friday from head injuries sustained in a car accident, reports said.

"There was a car accident on Thursday and the high commissioner died at 3.00 pm on Friday," a Pakistani diplomat, who did not wish to be identified, said.

Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Carl Schwenger said Ottawa had sent its sympathy and condolences to Pakistan.

"He touched many Canadians and Pakistanis with his commitment to building constructive and friendly ties between our two nations," the spokesman said.

The high commission said Altaf's remains would be sent to Pakistan for burial.

The Ottawa police said it was investigating the accident, which took place near Prime Minister Jean Chretien's residence.

Three other men, including Atlaf's driver, were injured in the two-car collision.
