Arun Mohanty in Moscow
Russia has once again extended its support to the inclusion of India as a permanent member in the UN Security Council when the body is expanded.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Orzhonikidge, speaking at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the reform and possible expansion of the council, said: "India is a strong and worthy candidate."
This is the third time Russia is extending its support publicly at the UN forum to Indian candidacy for the council.
The Russian minister said the reform of the council was an essential part of the process of restructuring of the UN.
He further said the expansion should ensure not only the Security Council's preservation but strengthen its potential in effectively fulfilling the tasks envisaged in the UN charter, particularly in the situation arising from September's terror attacks on American cities and the US retaliation against Afghanistan.
While saying there were also candidates from Latin America and Africa aiming at permanent membership in the council, the Russian minister did not name any country.
