The important thing to remember here, folks, is that Bangalore is a growing city.

And, like so much else in what used to be a "garden city" before the silicon revolution took big bytes (sorry, sorry, couldn't resist that hackneyed pun), Bangalore has more or less given up on its culinary traditions, without having gone entirely modern either.

So what, did you ask, does one eat when one has to eat? Simple: one stays with the south Indian speciality restaurants, where you are sure of authenticity and where the cheapest food is available. Idlis, dosais, vadas and similar food is best eaten at Udipi restaurants or "hotels", as they are called in local parlance, like, for example, the Kamat chain or the Darshinis or the famous MTR. At these quick bites places good real "tiffin" is available. Each area has its own favourite Udipi restaurant. Almost all the restaurants, including the Udipi restaurants serve north Indian dishes like naan and parathas accompanied by north Indian curries.

Or one goes to the other extreme, and checks out the city's numerous fast food outlets, for everything from dosas to pizzas.

For good South Indian food, not just idlis and dosas, it is the odd, highly expensive Karavalli or the not-so-steep Coconut Grove where the khaana or the food is great. It is a pity that no authentic Kanndiga food is available anywhere. Though, mouthwatering Andhra and Mangalorean cuisine are seen everywhere.

Bangalore does boast the odd upscale restaurant or three, many of them housed in the city's five-star hotels, for those who can't do without their daily Chinese/intercontinenal fix.

A variety of food to suit every kind of taste and budget is available all over Bangalore.
