AZ Alkmaar sunk Newcastle United 2-0 on Thursday to reach the UEFA Cup quarter-finals on the away goals rule after finishing the second knockout round tie 4-4 on aggregate.
The Dutch side made a convincing start and twice served notice to the Newcastle defence before Shota Arveladze netted a cross from Danny Koevermans after 13 minutes.
Ten
minutes into the second half, Koevermans doubled the lead when he headed home a corner from Maarten Martens at the near post.
Newcastle, who set out to defend their two-goal advantage from the first leg, had trouble changing their game plan and only Kieron Dyer and Obafemi Martins had chances but missed.
