Real Madrid, a record 10-time winners of the event, will have to make do with French champions Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Malmo.
Jose Mourinho will go back to his former club when Chelsea visit FC Porto in Group G. Dynamo Kiev and Maccabi Tel Aviv are the other teams in the group.
Louis van Gaal's Manchester United, who qualified with a 7-1 aggregate win over Club Brugge, have been placed in Group B along with Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, CSKA Moscow and Vfl Wolfsburg.
Group H looks the easiest of the eight, comprising of Zenit Saint Petersburg, Valencia, Olympique Lyon and Gent.
Danish legend Peter Schmeichel, who won the tournament with Manchester United in 1999, hosted the ceremony.
The final will be played next year at the San Siro in Milan.
