India tennis legend Leander Paes along with Maharashtra's Tourism and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated 'Waves' an art installation by artist Krishna Kedar at Bandra in Mumbai on Monday.
It is a Mumbai beautification initiative by the RPG Art Foundation in collaboration with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.
Also present at the unveiling was Leander's daughter Ayanna Paes.
The installation is made up of over 500 tennis rackets forged in weather-proof, chrome-plated stainless steel. The rackets sit on a blue base of an Apex Floor-guard emulsion, with an iconographic human figure holding a tennis racket perched unfalteringly against the vibrant fluidity of the wave, symbolising Leander Paes’s contribution to sports.
The installation aims to celebrate the spirit, courage and ability Mumbaikars to overcome daily obstacles thrown at them.
The artwork that took over six months in the making, weighs 600 kgs and stands at 10 x 15 x 6 feet in height, length, and width, respectively.
