Mahaveer fulfilled his promise by striking gold with partner Geeta Devi in bocce doubles as India capped another fruitful day at the Special Olympic Games in Dublin, Ireland, winning three gold and a silver medal on Friday.

Mahaveer of Delhi had promised his guardians, the sisters at the Missionaries of Charity, that he would definitely win a medal for the country. He duly achieved that when he combined with Geeta of Himachal Pradesh to win the doubles of the bocce event, beating competitors from Chinese Taipei, Cayman Islands and Seychelles.

India's other gold medals came in table tennis doubles and in long jump.

Neha Bansal of Haryana and Pooja Tulsankar of Maharashtra won the gold in the table tennis doubles while Sumit Soni of Haryana won the long jump event.

The last medal of the day for India came in the 100 metres run, in which Sharon Pereira of Goa claimed the silver medal.

In addition, Nibin Babu made it to the final round of 100 metres roller skating event after finishing second in the preliminary round on the opening day of competition today.

Nibin Babu clocked just under 17 seconds, finishing behind 12-year-old Mark Kovacs of Hungary, who took 14.51 seconds to complete the race.

About 7,000 athletes with learning disabilities are participating in 21 Olympic-style disciplines in the event. India, fielding an 83-member contingent in the Games, is taking part in 11 events.
