Somdev Devvarman progressed to the singles quarter-finals of the ATP South Africa Tennis Open with a straight sets win over giant killer Jesse Huta Galung in Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

Galung had shocked third seed and world number 49 Serb Janko Tipsarevic in the opening round but the Indian scored a convincing 6-3, 6-4 win over the Dutch player in the second round of the US$ 442,500 event.

It was theĀ first meeting between 110-ranked Somdev and Galung, who is placed 10 places below the Indian on the ATP ranking chart.

Somdev next faces South African Rik de Voest, who got the better of eighth seed Michal Przysiezny of Poland 6-3, 6-4 in his Round of 16 match.

Three seeded players, including top seed and world number 33 Feliciano Lopez of Spain, were knocked out from the ATP 250 tournament.

Lopez lost 7-6(5), 2-6, 6-7(8) to Canada's Frank Dancevic.
