Somdev Devvarman is one victory away from making the main draw of the US Open.
On Friday, he registered a 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2 second round win over Robby Ginepri of the United States in the qualifiers to keep his hopes alive.
After winning the first set via the tie-break, the Indian had three break opportunities in the second but was unable to convert them.
He was broken twice as Ginepri launched a comeback.
However, he was in command in the third set, cashing in on three of the four chances he got to clinch the match in 120 minutes.
After this second meeting between Somdev and Ginepri, the head-to-head score is 1-1.
The 113-ranked Somdev faces Great Britain’s James Ward, ranked 173, next.
