Indian Navy defeated Delhi FC 2-1 in their opening match of the Durand Cup football tournament at the Mohun Bagan ground in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Defender Dalraj Singh scored the winner late in the second-half off a header from a corner kick.

Trinidadian Willis Plaza had put the Delhi side ahead in the 21st minute before Indian Navy got the equaliser through Shreyas four minutes later.

Plaza got at the end of a floating ball inside the box after an attacking move by Reinreithan Shaiza and Dawda Cessay in the 21st minute to drive it past the Navy keeper Bhaskar Roy.

Indian Navy hit back almost immediately when Nihal Sudeesh’s cross from the right saw Shreyas, who had a fantastic game overall, swoop in between Delhi defenders inside the six-yard box for a clinical finish.

The goal boosted the Navy side and coach Abhilash Nair also affected changes, bringing in Sarabjit Singh for Jijo in midfield.

Plaza, however, did get a golden chance to put Delhi FC back ahead just before half-time, but his shot from close range was thwarted by keeper Roy.

The second-half did not rise to the competitive levels of the first for most parts before Dalraj ensured a grand stand finish. Rising above the crowd off a Navy corner in the 86th minute, he blasted a header past a hapless Manvir Singh in the Delhi goal.

"The coach used to make us practice these set-pieces all the time and also told us how to play in short-passes given they had deep back-four. I think following his plans helped and we got the result," said Dalraj.

Nair, on the other hand, said, "I am very happy because our boys played to the plan and followed all instructions which is why we got the result despite losing two players to injury at the last moment. We will look to to win all games.”

Delhi FC head coach Yan Law was understandably disappointed.

"We have tough games against ISL sides Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters coming up and we need to definitely improve in all departments if we have to get the results our way," he said.

Sanctions await EPL clubs if they play South American players

Premier League clubs could face sanctions from FIFA if they play South American players, who were not released for international duty, in this weekend's games.

Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City are among clubs who did not release Brazilian players for the current international break due to them having to travel to 'red list' countries and face a choice of not selecting those players this weekend or running the risk of sanctions.

Sources told Reuters that the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) have triggered the 'automatic restriction period' of five days which stops clubs picking players who have not been released.

The CBF later confirmed that they had indeed contacted FIFA to enforce their rules.

"The information is correct," a CBF spokesman told Reuters. "We're only asking that FIFA comply with the regulations after players do not present themselves (for international duty)."

The spokesman said the request did not cover Everton's striker Richarlison, who had previously been released by his club for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The CBF have also asked for the restriction to be applied to Russian club Zenit St Petersburg who recalled their players Malcom and Claudinho after they had teamed up with the Brazil squad.

Premier League clubs Wolves, Newcastle and Watford, along with Championship team Blackburn Rovers, could also lose players this weekend after the Chilean, Mexican and Paraguayan associations also activated the restriction period.

FIFA's rules state that any club selecting a player during the restriction period could face disciplinary action. It is not clear what kind of sanction the clubs could face.

With South American countries on the COVID-19 red list for travel from the UK -- meaning players would face hotel quarantine upon return to the country -- the clubs chose not to release their players.

FIFA declined to comment. The Premier League and the Football Association were not immediately available for comment.

The CEO of the European Club Association, Charlie Marshall, said on Tuesday that the clubs should not face any punishment.

"We don't think there should be sanctions because if a player has to quarantine he is unavailable to immediately play for his club again, so it would be longer than the agreed release period," he said at an ECA general assembly.

FIFA had waived their normal regulations on international call-ups during the pandemic but did not extend that waiver to cover the current games.

Liverpool would be without Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino for their match at Leeds United on Sunday. The Yorkshire club would be without Raphinha.

Manchester City would be without goalkeeper Ederson and Gabriel Jesus against Leicester City on Saturday. Manchester United midfielder Fred and Chelsea defender Thiago Silva would also be impacted.

Players from Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur did feature for Argentina in their game against Brazil which was abandoned after five minutes on Sunday.

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings after Brazilian health authorities invaded the pitch to stop the game after accusing four of Argentina's English Premier League players of violating the country's COVID-19 quarantine rules.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Tottenham Hotspur duo Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso were on the Neo Quimica Arena field as part of Argentina's team when officials from Brazil's health regulator Anvisa halted the match. Villa's Emiliano Buendia was in the stands.
