Indian tennis stars Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi

In what could be huge news for Indian tennis fans, two stalwarts of the game -- Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi -- could pair up for the upcoming Rio Olympics 2016.

According to reports, the duo met a few days ago in Mumbai, where both of them expressed their willingness to play together.

The duo has represented India in several Olympics.

They also won the men's doubles titles at the French Open and Wimbledon in 1999, a year when they also made it to the finals of the Australian Open and the US Open. They won another crown at Roland Garros in 2001.

Paes, who won an Olympic medal in 1996 Atlanta Olympics, is hoping to set a world record by becoming the only tennis player to play seven Olympic Games.

Paes was paired with Vishnu Vardhan at the London Olympics 2012 after Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna refused to play with him at the quadrennial event.

India’s tennis queen Sania Mirza is the only Indian tennis player guaranteed an entry at Rio.
