Leander Paes's campaign at the Australian Open came to an end when he and Elena Vesnina of Russia were knocked out of the mixed doubles in Melbourne, on Tuesday.
Paes-Vesnina went down 3-6, 2-6 to the Australian duo of Jarmila Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden in a second round match.
Gajdosova-Ebden will take on another Indo-Russian combine, Mahesh Bhupathi and Nadia Petrova, in the quarter-finals.
Bhupathi-Petrova had earlier in the day entered the last eight, rallying from a set down to register a 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 victory over Katarina Srebotnik of Slovakia and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia.
Paes and Radek Stepanek were knocked out in the first round of the men's doubles. They lost 3-6, 5-7 to South Africa's Kevin Anderson and Israel's Jonathan Erlich.
On Monday, Sania Mirza and her new American partner Bob Bryan advanced to the quarter-finals after a come-from-behind victory.
The third seeded Indo-American pair defeated the US team of Abigail Spears and Scott Lipsky 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 in the second round.
They meet the Czech pair of Lucie Hradecka and Frantisek Cermak for a place in the semi-finals.
Rohan Bopanna and his Taipei partner Su-Wei Hsieh also made the grade with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia and Fabio Fognini of Italy.
They next clash with Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic and Marcin Matkowski of Poland.
Sania and Bopanna will clash in the semi-finals if they win their next round matches.
