Holders Internacional fell victim to another Uruguayan ambush of a Brazilian team when Penarol upset them 2-1 away to knock them out of the Libertadores Cup on Wednesday.
Penarol, crowned South American champions five times but playing in the competition for the first time since 2004, won 3-2 on aggregate to reach the quarter-finals.
Penarol's strikers Alejandro Martinuccio and Juan Manuel Olivera each scored a goal in the the opening five minutes of the second half to turn the match around after Oscar's first-minute strike for Internacional.
"We dominated the first half. I don't know what happened in the second, we conceded incredible goals," Internacional striker Leandro Damiao told reporters.
"We all made errors. It's lamentable to suffer elimination this way in our own home," he added.
The defeat was Inter's second big upset in international competition in five months after their 2-0 defeat by African champions TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Club World Cup in December.
Uruguay's most famous Brazilian ambush was shocking the host nation 2-1 in the 1950 World Cup final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro in the "Maracanazo".
LOW SHOT
Internacional, who had drawn the first leg 1-1 in Montevideo last week, had a very early lead to build on when Brazil international Leandro Damiao brought the ball down for his fellow striker close to the box.
Oscar let fly with a low shot from 18 metres that went inside the near post past diving goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa.
But the Uruguayan side, who won the last of their five titles in 1987, were quick to recover their composure.
Penarol came close to an equaliser on the quarter hour when midfielder Andres Freitas glanced a header from a corner that went just wide of goalkeeper Renan's far post.
Internacional were stunned after half-time when right from the restart, Argentine man-of-the-match Martinuccio raced past three defenders into the box to shoot past Renan, who stood rooted to the spot.
Less than five minutes later, midfielder Luis Aguiar made a good run down the left, his pace taking him past two men, to cross into the middle where Olivera headed past Renan into the top corner.
Freitas missed a good chance to bury Inter on the hour after his strike from a partially cleared kick flew over the bar.
Inter, winners in 2006 and 2010, had their chances to get back into the match, a shot from Leandro Damiao being cleared off the line and Argentina midfielder Mario Bolatti's long-range effort skimming the post.
Their last clear effort was a header from defender Rodrigo that hit the base of the post in added time.
