He may have once skipped the cricket tour of India in fear of being questioned for his alleged role in the 2000 match-fixing scandal, but former South African all-rounder Nicky Boje, who was later cleared of all charges, is set to participate in the Mumbai Marathon on January 17.
- All about the match-fixing scandal
Former left-arm spinner Boje, who has already completed the Berlin Marathon, will be off for a month from his job as head coach of the provincial side Knights and will also feature in the Masters Champions League T20 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The tournament, which features ex-international players, takes place from January 28 to February 13 next year.
Meanwhile, former Proteas speedster and ex-bowling coach of the national team Allan Donald will take over Boje's duties at the Knights till the time he is away.
On the other hand, Boje believes that he still has a lot of cricket left in him and also shared his ambition of running marathons with his wife Anel.
Boje, once a wanted man in India for his alleged role in the 2000 match-fixing scandal that precipitated the biggest crisis in international cricket and the end for Proteas captain Hansie Cronje, was later cleared after submitting to questioning by Indian investigators.
He was also left out of subsequent tours to India and announced his retirement from international cricket on the eve of the tour to India in 2006.
