As part of his preparations for the second major of the season, the French Open, world number three Roger Federer will play in next week's Madrid Open, confirmed the tournament officials.

Tournament director Manolo Santana said they were delighted to be able to count Federer's presence once again at the Caja Magica.

Describing Federer as one of the best tennis players in history, Santana added that Madrid has turned out to be a special place for the 17-time Grand Slam champion in the past, Sport24 reported.

Federer, who is a three-time winner in Madrid, had initially planned to skip the fourth Masters series event in order to reserve his energy for the three remaining Grand Slams and Rio Olympics, scheduled later in the year.

But now, he has decided to go ahead with the tournament after having missed nearly three months of the season due to knee injury.

Besides Federer, top-ranked Novak Djokovic, defending champion Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will also feature in the tournament.
