Manchester City moved five points clear at the top of the Premier League as Sergio Aguero's record-equalling strike set them on their way to a 3-0 win over Burnley at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
City were not at their all-action best early on as Burnley looked comfortable at the back, but the game turned on a penalty decision that incensed the visitors when Bernardo Silva was adjudged to have been brought down by Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope just before the half hour.
Aguero stepped up to score the goal that moved him level with Eric Brook on 177 City goals, before a 73rd-minute Nicolas Otamendi header and a smart Leroy Sane finish made sure of victory in the Manchester rain.
With Manchester United slipping to a surprise defeat at Huddersfield, City now sit five points clear at the top of the table, and remain very much the team to beat. Burnley stayed seventh.
Caretaker Appleton leads Leicester to 2-1 win over Swansea
A Federico Fernandez own goal and a second-half strike by Shinji Okazaki gave Leicester City caretaker manager Michael Appleton a much-needed 2-1 win away to Swansea City in his first game in charge, lifting the Foxes out of the bottom three in the process.
Taking the reins after the sacking of Craig Shakespeare earlier in the week, Appleton saw Fernandez head the ball into his own net to give Leicester the lead after 25 minutes. Okazaki doubled the advantage just after the break, firing home to finish a quick counter-attack.
Defender Alfie Mawson pulled one back for Swansea, hooking the ball home following a corner for his first goal of the season and prompting Swansea to pour forward looking for an equaliser.
In doing so they left huge gaps at the back, and Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez both could have scored. Leicester hung on for the win that sent them out of the relegation zone and up to 13th place in the table on nine points after nine games.
Late Merino header gives Newcastle 1-0 win over Palace
A late header by substitute Mikel Merino gave Newcastle a 1-0 home win over bottom team CrystalPalace in a scrappy Premier League clash at St James's Park on Saturday.
Merino made a run into the box and powered home an inviting Matt Ritchie corner to settle a scrappy game littered with fouls and there were few chances at either end.
Palace were left the only Premier League side yet to keep a clean sheet this season and lost by the same score when the two sides last met in the top flight in 2016, when their forward Andros Townsend scored for his former club.
This time round, Townsend was jeered Newcastle fans in an ill-tempered match and was lucky to escape with only a yellow card for a reckless tackle on Newcastle's DeAndre Yeldin.
