Hamizan Amirul Ibrahim won the men's 56-kg weightlifting event to claim Malaysia's first gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Sports Complex in Delhi, on Monday.

Ibrahim set a new Games mark of 116 in the snatch to claim first place with a total of 257 kgs after he lifted 141 in the clean and jerk.

India's Sukhen Dey, 21, provided a stiff challenge to the winner but had to settle for silver eventually. The young lifter totalled 252 with a best of 112 in the snatch and 140 in the clean and jerk to claim India's second silver medal of the day.

Srinivasa Rao completed the double, claiming bronze with a total of 248 in the two categories.

Hot favourite Ibrahim faulted just once in each category but proved unstoppable despite the tough fight by the two Indian lifters.

Dey, though, proved to be the showstopper as he notched up his career best scores.

"I have done a lot of hardwork in my technique over the last few months. I have worked on my technical faults and discussed the same with my coaches and senior players. I focused a lot on improving my technique, which has helped me," Dey said.

Coach Harnam Singh also praised his wards and declared that the success on day one would spurs other lifters to come up with medal winning performances in the next few days.

"I am not satisfied with our day one performance. We [Chanu] missed a gold medal. All I can is that I am satisfied but a bit disappointed," he said.

Earlier, Soniya Chanu had won the silver in the women's 48-kg, while compatriot Sandhya Devi Rani took the bronze to help India register four medals on day one.
