Vijender Singh's cousin Balwinder Beniwal lived up to expectations as Indian boxers bagged three gold and one silver medal in the third Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune on Friday.
Nanao Singh Thokchom of Army Sports Institute opened the account, out-pointing Zack Davies of Wales 25-10 in the 48kg category, before Sixteen-year-old Shanthosh Virothu of Andhra Pradesh beat Jonker Alexander of South Africa 16-4.
In the next bout, involving Indians, Balwinder had a tough run initially against Benjamin Shamoon of Canada in the 69kg category, the scores tied 2-2. However, he emerged winner in the tie-breaker.
"Vijender is my brother as well as mentor... He always helps me out with the tips and before this meet he told me how to tackle left and right-handers. His tricks paid dividends today," the Bhiwani boxer said.
"Now I am looking forward to go back home and we will both have a party with his Olympic bronze and my CYG gold."
Satender had to settle for silver after losing to Stuart Twardzik of Canada in the 75kg category.
