Indian football ace Baichung Bhutia, admitted to a Kolkata hospital after complaining of weight loss, was much better and will be discharged on Wednesday.

Medical reports indicated that over-functioning of thyroid and mild dysfunction of the liver could be the reasons behind his drastic loss of weight of over 7.5 kg in the last month.

"Both these conditions can be related. We are awaiting some more reports," gastroenterologist Dr Mahesh Goenka, heading a team of doctors treating him, said.

Goenka said the team put him through a number of tests including thyroid and liver tests as also virus studies, endoscopy, thyroid scan and ultrasonography.

Bhutia has been advised appropriate medication.

"He is likely to be discharged tomorrow and should be back to normal life in a couple of days," the doctor added.

Bhutia expressed hope that he would be able to return to the soccer ground in a month's time.

"The rest has done me good after the hectic schedule last year. This will help me return to the grounds with recharged batteries," he said.

He said he had read in the media that the AIFF would foot his medical expenses.

"But nobody has approached me so far," he added.

To a question if his ailment could have been triggered by the intake of junk food during his trip to Turkmenistan and Jordan some time ago, Goenka said this could be one of the reasons, but not the only one.
