Sania Mirza’s hopes of a grand double at the Australian Open were dashed after she and Croatian partner Ivan Dodig were beaten in the semi-finals of the mixed doubles on Friday night.

The Indian ace, who had earlier in the day won the women’s doubles partnering Switzerland’s Martina Hingis, and the Croat were beaten by fifth seeds Elena Vesnina of Russia and Bruno Soares of Brazil.

The top seeds lost 5-7, 6-7(4-7).

Earlier, Sania and Hingis clinched their first Australian Open women's doubles title together with a 7-6(1) 6-3 victory over the Czech pair of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.

It was the 12th Grand Slam women's doubles title for Hingis while the third for the Indian, all of which have come with the Swiss in the last year.

The pair, which has now won 36 successive doubles matches, are also the reigning Wimbledon and US Open champions.
