Chitravel retires hurt after hamstring injury

Praveen Chitravel was forced to retire hurt after pulling his hamstring following his first attempt in the men's triple jump.

His opening jump was ruled a foul and he was unable to continue, leaving a No Mark against his name.

It was a disappointing end for Chitravel, who had been in good form this season and won silver at the Commonwealth Games just a couple of months ago.

Animesh Kujur finished second in his 200m semifinal, clocking 20.81 seconds to qualify for the final.

Thailand's Puripol Boonson, the 100m champion, was in a class of his own, setting a new Games Record of 20.10 seconds.

For Kujur, the qualification was a welcome turnaround after he missed out on the 100m final.

Asian Games: Jolly-Gopichand Stun World No 3; enter quarters

India's Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand outclassed the World No. 3 pairing of Mayu Matsumoto and Yuki Fukushima of Japan 24-22, 21-18 to storm into the women's doubles quarter-finals at the Asian Games on Saturday.

After claiming a narrow 24-22 win in the first game, the Indians found themselves 8-11 down in the second game.

The two teams battled hard to level scores at 18-18 before Jolly and Gopichand held their nerve to close out the game and seal a thrilling victory.

They are one victory away from securing an Asian Games medal.

They will face Malaysia's World No. 5 pair Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan in the quarter-finals.

Asian Games: India Men Overpower Iran To Win Kabaddi GOLD

The Indian men's team registered a hard-earned 40-34 victory against Iran in the kabaddi final to win the gold medal at the Asian Games.

This is India's fourth gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games.

The men's final was a tense affair, with the scores tied at 20-20 at one stage before India managed to gain the upper-hand and secure another gold.

The Indian men had won seven successive gold medals before their dominance was halted at the 2018 Jakarta Games, where Iran emerged champions and India finished fourth. India bounced back at the 2023 Hangzhou Games, reclaiming the title.

It was India's overall ninth gold medal in kabaddi at the Asian Games.

Earlier, the women's team held a 22-16 lead at half-time, but Iran fought back strongly in the second half, winning it 18-15. However, the Indian cushion proved sufficient as they held on for a thrilling victory.

Asian Games Hockey: India men beat Japan 2-0; march into semis

Defending champions India advanced to the semi-finals of the Asian Games men's hockey competition after defeating hosts Japan 2-0 in a hard-fought pool A contest.

India had earlier thrashed Indonesia 13-1, Sri Lanka 16-1 and South Korea 8-2 in their opening three pool matches. The win over Japan was their fourth consecutive in the event, continuing an unbeaten run.

India will take on Bangladesh in their final pool match against Bangladesh on September 28, which they are expected to win handsomely.

Against Japan, Abhishek (15th minute) scored from a field effort while skipper Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner in the 40th minute.

It was a pulsating first two quarters where Japan matched India stick-for-stick with their aggressive play but the defending champions went into the breather with a slender one goal lead.

India extended their lead from their fifth penalty corner with skipper Harmanpreet scoring through a fierce low flick to the right of the Japanese custodian.

The Indian men's cricket team arrived in Nagoya on Saturday ahead of their Asian Games 2026 quarter-final clash against Afghanistan, with the Shreyas Iyer-led side beginning its campaign as it looks to defend the gold medal won at the previous edition in Hangzhou.

India will face Afghanistan in the quarter-final on Monday, September 28, 2026.

The Indian team also includes superstars like Jasprit Bumrah, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan among others.

Batting great VVS Laxman is the head coach of the team for the Asian Games.

India are entering the competition with the aim of retaining the gold medal they won in Hangzhou in 2023. On that occasion, India defeated Afghanistan for the gold after the final was washed out, with the higher-seeded Indian side awarded the title. The team was led by Ruturaj Gaikwad.

The men's cricket competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Games has entered the knockout stage following the completion of the first round.

Afghanistan and Nepal qualified for the quarter-finals from Group A after Japan's match against Nepal was abandoned due to rain. Nepal topped the group, while Japan were eliminated from the competition.

Nepal will face Sri Lanka in the other quarter-final from that group on September 29.

Group B comprises Malaysia, Hong Kong and Oman, with the top two teams advancing to the quarter-finals. The two qualifiers from the group will face Pakistan and Bangladesh in the last eight.

India's women's cricket team have already completed a successful title defence at the Games, beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final under Harmanpreet Kaur to claim the country's first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.

Abhay Singh stormed into the men's squash singles gold medal match after thrashing Pakistan's Muhammad Irfan 3-0 in the semi-finals at the Asian Games on Saturday.

Abhay registered a comfortable 11-3 12-10 11-6 straight games victory.

Abhay made a commanding start in his semi-final, racing to a 6-2 lead in the opening game and continued in the same vein through the 35-minute match.

The Indian looked in total control of the match on his way to to the final and step closer to the gold medal.

He was stretched in the second game by his opponent from Pakistan but came out unscathed to lead 2-0.

The script remained the same in the third game as Abhay emerged winner without any facing any trouble.

Asian Games: Boxer Kapil storms into men's 91kg quarters

India's boxer Kapil Pokhariya delivered a superb performance to advance to the quarter-finals but it was curtains for compatriot Jadumani Singh at the Asian Games on Saturday.

Kapil, the boxer from Uttarakhand, registered a 5-0 win over Iran's Sam Estaki in the men's 90kg category to enter the last eight.

But Jadumani, competing in the men's 55kg category, lost 0-3 to Philippines' Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Carlo Paalam.

India's Priya will be up against Oh Yeonji of South Korea in women's 60kg round of 16 bout later in the day.

Pokhariya controlled the contest from the outset, taking a 4-1 lead in the opening round and using his cleaner punching to dictate the pace despite Estaki's height advantage.

The Indian continued to hold the upper hand in the second round, earning another unanimous 5-0 verdict from the judges.

Estaki could not mount a serious challenge in the final round as Pokhariya remained composed to complete a comfortable win.

In the women's foil event, the team comprising Joys Ashitha Stalinraj, Sonia Devi Waikhom, Kanupriya Chawla and Mina Devi Naorem suffered a 14-45 loss to Japan in the quarter-finals.

India had defeated Indonesia 45-24 in the round of 16.

Joshna-Senthilkumar lose in mixed double semis; settle for bronze

Joshna Chinappa and Velavan Senthilkumar settled for the bronze medal after losing a thrilling semi-final against Hong Kong's Yi Ka Lee and Ming Hong Tang in the squash mixed doubles at the Asian Game on Saturday.

Chinappa-Senthilkumar squandered three match points in the decider to suffer a heartbreaking 10-11, 11-2, 10-11 defeat.

Veteran Chinappa is playing in a record seventh Asian Games. She had won two silver and three bronze medals in the past edition of the Games.

She won a singles bronze in 2018 edition, a team silver each in 2014 and 2018, and team bronze each in 2010 and 2022. Joshna, who is playing in her seventh successive Asian Games since the 2002 Busan edition, surpassed the earlier record of another Indian squash great Saurav Ghosal who retired last year after playing six times in the continental multi-sport event.

Kujur clocked 21.10 seconds to finish first in his heat and secure his place in the semi-finals.

The Indian athlete produced a strong performance in the heats to comfortably progress to the next stage of the competition.

Kujur will look to bounce in the 200m after failing to make it to the final of the 100m.

India's Yashaswini Ghorpade's was knocked out of the table tennis women's singles after she losing 1-4 to Japan's Miwa Harimoto in the third round at the Asian Games on Saturday.

Yashaswini went down fighting 9-11, 5-11, 11-4, 4-11, 5-11 against the World No. 3 Japanese player.

The Indian struggled to match Harimoto's consistency in the opening two games, falling 9-11 and 5-11 before producing a strong response in the third. Yashaswini dominated the game 11-4 to reduce the deficit and keep her singles campaign alive.

Harimoto, however, regained control in the fourth game, winning it 11-4 before closing out the contest 11-5 in the fifth to progress to the next round.

Yashaswini had earlier advanced to the third round after defeating Syria's Hend Zaza in the second round. The 21-year-old's exit came after she had also featured in the women's doubles and mixed doubles events earlier in the Games.

India wins silver in women's 50m rifle 3 positions

The Indian trio of Tilottama Sen, Vidarsa Vinod and Ashi Chouksey won the silver medal in women's 50m rifle 3 positions team event at the Asian Games on Saturday, with the first two shooters also making the individual final.

The Indian team aggregated 1763 to finish second on the podium. China claimed the gold medal with a games record 1773, while Kazakhstan settled for the bronze with 1754 following a gruelling contest.

In the individual section, both Ashi and Tilottama placed themselves in the top three with scores of 395-25x and 395-23x to qualify for the individual final.

Decathlon: Tejaswin Shankar starts with 10.98s in 100m

India's Tejaswin Shankar and N Thowfeeq began their campaign in the men’s decathlon event at the Asian Games 2026 with the 100m race on Saturday.

Tejaswin clocked 10.98 seconds in the first event of the decathlon, earning 865 points. The Indian national record holder finished fifth after the opening event. Thowfeeq competed in Heat 1 of the 100m event and finished fourth in his heat with a timing of 11.02 seconds, collecting 856 points.

Tejaswin, who won a silver medal in the decathlon at the Hangzhou Asian Games, is aiming to secure back-to-back Asian Games medals in the event. The 100m race is the first of the 10 events in the decathlon, with athletes set to compete across multiple disciplines over two days.

Tejaswin will look to make up ground in his stronger events, including the long jump and high jump, scheduled later in the day. The Indian athlete will aim to accumulate crucial points as the competition progresses towards the second day.

Asian Games: Sawan Barwal wins historic silver in men's marathon

India's Sawan Barwal won a historic silver medal with a personal best timing in men's marathon final at the Asian Games on Saturday, registering the country's first podium finish in the event in 44 years.

India last won a marathon medal in the mega event at the 1982 Delhi edition of the Games.

Barwal clocked 2:11:37, finishing 48 seconds behind gold medallist Ichitaka Yamashita of Japan, who clocked 2:10:49. China's Peiyou Feng (2:12:13) bagged the bronze medal.

In April this year, he broke Shivnath Singh's 48-year-old national record at the NN Marathon, Rotterdam.

Barwal was leading the pack for a while.

At the halfway mark, Barwal had moved up to second place with a timing of 1:05:54. Kartik Karkera, the other Indian runner in event, finished 17th among 19 runners.

Asian Games: Lakshya Sen crashes out in 2nd round

India's shuttler Lakshya Sen suffered a second-round exit, losing to former World champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore in three games at the Asian Games on Saturday.

The World No. 14 Sen went down 12-21, 21-15, 14-21 to the 2021 world champion, ranked 13th, in a battle lasting more than an hour at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.

The defeat came just a day after the shock exit of former World No. 1 pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty from the men's doubles, dealing another blow to India's badminton campaign.

An individual medal at the Asian Games thus continued to elude Sen, who had won the Commonwealth Games gold in 2022 and went on to finish fourth at the Paris Olympics.

Sen, who has a team silver from last edition at Hangzhou, won a bronze in the team event on Wednesday.
