Boxing: Pangal loses to Zambia's Chinyemba

Former World number one boxer Amit Panghal bowed out of the Paris Olympics with a 1-4 loss to Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba in the 51kg pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The Indian boxer had got a bye in the opening round.

Panghal, the 2019 World championship silver medallist, was put under pressure by the sprightly Zambian, the reigning African Games champion, in the opening round itself.

The Indian paid for his defensive approach as the third seeded Chinyemba assumed the role of the aggressor in the opening three minutes.

Trailing on three cards, Panghal attacked from the get go but had trouble connecting his punches as Chinyemba took the second round 3-2.

In the final three minutes, both boxers were involved in big exchanges with Panghal trying to apply pressure.

But the Indian, who had made a similar exit in the Tokyo Olympics, was not able to impress any of the judges.

Archer Bhajan Kaur enters Round of 16

India's Bhajan Kaur won back to back matches to advance to the Round of 16 in the women's individual archery event at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

In her first match, Kaur recovered after a slow start to outclass Indonesia's Kamal Syifa Nurafifah 7-3 to advance to the Round of 32.

In the second match played soon after, Kaur outclassed Wioleta Myzsor of Poland 6-0 to enter the pre-quarter-finals.

Earlier, Ankita Bhakat was beaten 4-6 by Myzsor in her first round match to be knocked out of the individual event.

Satwik-Chirag continue winning run; top group

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty notched up a dominating straight-game win against Indonesian duo of Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Fajar Alfian to top Group C in the men's doubles badminton competition.

The third-seeded Indian duo beat their opponents 21-13, 21-13 in the final Group C match which lasted just 38 minutes.

The reigning Asian Games champion Indian pair had qualified for the quarter-finals on Monday after the withdrawal of one pair and the loss suffered by another. Tuesday's match was meant to decide group winner.

The Indonesian pair also qualified for the last eight after finishing second in the group.

Hockey: India beat Ireland 2-0

Ireland exert some late pressure with a couple of penalty corner but India's defenders hold strong to deny the Irish strikers.

India register a hardfought 2-0 victory against Ireland to boost their hopes of making it to the quarter-finals.

Harmanpreet Singh scored two goals to help India register their second victory in three games.

Ireland earn a penalty corner in the 40th minute but India goalkeeper P R Sreejesh solidly blocks it before Ireland are awarded another PC but they can't capitalise.

India get a penalty corner which is wasted as the drag flick goes wide.

Ireland waste a golden opportunity to score their first goal as Benjamin Walker chips it over the bat with only goalkeeper Sreejesh to beat. That was a poor attempt by Walker as Ireland rue missing out on a goal as the third quarter is set to end.

Ireland get a penalty corner with 10 seconds left in the third quarter. The ball is blocked but is quite high as the referee again blows for the PC.

Third attempt for Ireland, who fail to convert again as India survive some anxious moments to hold on to the 2-0 lead.

Hockey: India lead Ireland 2-0

Ireland make a rare foray into the opposition 'D' but the India defenders up to the task as they avert the danger.

Lalit Upadhyay with some fine dribbling at the other end in the Ireland box. He manages to keep hold of the ball despite losing his balance passing to his team-mate, who is crowded by the defenders who clear the ball.

A long pass to Lalit on the left but he can't find a way past the Ireland defenders.

Two minutes left for the interval as India look for another goal to put the result beyond doubt but Ireland are making a late move forward.

30 seconds to go as India's defenders keep hold of the ball and let the clock run down.

India have a comfortable 2-0 lead the half time.

In the second quarter, India earn a penalty corner courtesy of some good work from Rajkumar Pal from the right.

Harmanpreet with the powerful drag flick but it hits the foot of an Ireland player as the penalty corner is retaken.

Harmanpreet doesn't miss out this time around as his powerful flicks slams the back of the net to double India's lead.

India 2-0 in the 19th minute.

Harmanpreet gets his fourth goal of the Paris Olympics, he has scored in all three games.

The 1st quarter has gone India's way and they go into the break with a 1-0 lead against Ireland.

India enjoy early possession in the first quarter and Jarmanpreet gets a warning from the umpire for shoving his opponent.

India get a penalty stroke and Harmanpreet converts and India have an early lead in the 10th minute.

India continue to keep possession and the have the Ireland running around in circles, chasing the ball.

Ireland have their moment as they penetrate into India's D. They get a penalty corner but nothing comes of it.

The Indian men's hockey team play Ireland in their Pool B match in a little under 10 minutes.

India salvaged a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Argentina in their second pool match at the Paris Olympics on Monday.

They had narrowly beaten New Zealand 3-2 on Saturday.

India win bronze

Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec of Serbia won the 10 metre air pistol mixed team gold at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday.

They beat Sevval Ilayda Tarhan and Yusuf Dikec of Turkey 16-14 at the Chateauroux Shooting Centre. Manu Bhaker and Sarabjot Singh won the bronze for India beating the South Korean pair of Oh Ye-jin and Lee Won-ho 16-10.

First team to 16 points will win the bronze and India are now 20.8 points in this series and India have a 14-6 lead.

Match point now and Korea shoots 10.8 and Sarabjot hits 9.7 and Korea are now trailing 8-14.

Korea's OH shoots 10.2 and Manu shoots 10.6 and 20.8. Korea are back in this with 2 points.

India win 2nd medal in Paris

The United States romped to a resounding 102-76 victory over Japan in the women's basketball tournament at the Pierre Mauroy stadium on Monday, demonstrating that the defending champions are positioned to make a strong push for their eighth consecutive Olympic gold medal.

In their Group C opener, the Americans took to the court with all the firepower of Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson, who combined to pour in 46 points, and under the leadership of captain Diana Taurasi, who is making her sixth Games appearance in Paris.

Taurasi, 42, said she was happy to be back in Lille, where she often played in the city during her time in the EuroLeague Women, and said that more and more athletes like herself are reaching a stage of long term in their careers.

India win bronze in 10m Air Pistol Mixed event

Manu Bhaker was composure personified while Sarabjot Singh played an ideal foil as the pair won the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze defeating South Korea to script history at the Olympics on Tuesday.

The Indian pair defeated the Koreans 16-10 to earn the country its second medal at the quadrennial showpiece, and in the process made Bhaker the first Indian post independence to bag two medals in a single edition of the Games.

She had earlier bagged the bronze medal in the women's 10m air pistol event at the same venue on Sunday.

British-Indian athlete Norman Pritchard had won two silver medals in 200m sprint and 200m hurdles at the 1900 Olympics but that achievement had come in the pre-Independence era.

Indian hockey team face Ireland

Welcome one and all as we bring you updates from yet another day of exciting action from the Olympic Games in Paris, on Tuesday.

Shooter Manu Bhaker will be aiming to win India's second medal at the Paris Olympic Games when she and partner Sarabjot Singh compete in the 10m air pistol mixed team bronze medal play-off match against South Korea's Jin Oh Ye and Wonho Lee.

Experienced boxer Amit Panghal will take the ring later in the evening in his men's 51kg Round of 16 bout against Zambia's Patrick Chinyemba.

The Indian men's hockey team will be aiming to bounce back after their below-par showing against Argentina, when they clash against Ireland in their third Pool B match.

The archers will be looking to make up for their disappointments in the team event as they compete in the individual rounds, while the star badminton duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will also be taking to the courts in their group stage game.

Manika Batra creates history!

Manika Batra became the first Indian table tennis player to reach the round of 16 in the Olympic Games singles competition after a 4-0 thrashing of higher-ranked Prithika Pavade of France.

The 29-year-old Manika, gold medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, won 11-9, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 against her 19-year-opponent Pavade, whose parents were originally from Puducherry before shifting to France in 2003.

In the Tokyo Olympics, Manika had become the first women's table tennis player from India to make it to the round of 32 in singles. She did one step better than that here on Monday.

Achanta Sharath Kamal had also reached the round of 32 in men's singles in the Tokyo Olympics.

Manika is currently ranked 28th in the world, 10 places lower than Pavade.
