Bartoli charmed everyone when she unexpectedly reached the final 12 months ago and was runner-up to Venus Williams but her 2008 campaign will be less memorable after an injury scuppered her chances.
The French 11th seed needed a medical time out on what appeared to be a stiff shoulder at 4-5 down in the first set.
Despite being given a rub down by the trainer, her fortunes failed to revive and she went down to an opponent who is more well known for her outlandish dress sense than her grasscourt pedigree.
