Villa, who scored a brilliant hat-trick in Spain's 4-1 thrashing of Russia in their opening match and also scored their winner against Sweden was well-marked for most of the match by the Italians.
However, the Valencia star did convert his opening penalty to give Spain a headstart in the shootout.
