The Romanian forward, who plays his club football in Italy with Fiorentina, managed to take advantage of a Gianluca Zambrotta faux pas and beat goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
However, Buffon had the last word, saving Mutu's penalty, a shot which would have won the match for Romania.
Mutu had quite an eventful match with Norwegian referee Tom Henning handing him a yellow card.
