Maurice Greene (9.79 seconds)
Greene set the 100 metres world record at 9.79 seconds in 1999, slicing five hundredths of a second off Donovan Bailey's three-year record of 9.84. Incidentally, it also lowered the world record by the largest margin since the advent of electronic timing.

Greene's record stood for more than three years before fellow-American Tim Montgomery clocked 9.78 seconds in 2002. Montgomery though was later stripped of the record after being found guilty of using banned substances.
Greene, who won the 100 metres gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, announced his retirement from the sport in February this year.
