Shrinking the 100 metres mark

The 100 metres dash is the shortest outdoor sprint race; winning it earns one the title of 'Fastest'. Over the years, the men's world record has taken a beating eleven times since the introduction of electronic timing in 1968, but was never surpassed by more than 0.05 seconds at a time.

  • On Saturday, Jamaica's Usain Bolt electrified the Reebok Grand Prix in New York, setting a new 100 metres world record. The 21-year-old streaked home in a time of 9.72 seconds, breaking the previous record of 9.74 posted by compatriot Asafa Powell last September.

    It was the 17th time the record was legally broken since the United States' Don Lippincott clocked 10.6 seconds in 1912, and the eighth new 100 metres record since 1991.
