Beijing organisers take delivery of medals

The metal -- 13.04 kg of gold, 1,340 kg of silver and 830 kg of copper -- came from the company's mines in Australia and Chile, while the jade was sourced in China.

  • China's Gao Min, who won diving gold at the Seoul and Barcelona Olympics, said she thought the medals are more beautiful than those of previous Games.

    "It is the dream of every athlete to win a medal at the Games," she said. "My Olympic medals represent the biggest honour of my lifetime and I cherish them."

    Did you know? After the revival of the modern Olympics in 1896, the winners received a silver medal while the second place finishers received a bronze medal, the third none at all. However, since the 1904 Games in St. Louis, the sequence of gold-silver-bronze for the first three places started.
