The California-born Jones shot into the spotlight when as she became the first woman to win five athletics medals at a single Olympics.
Jones, 25 then, won gold medals in the 100 metres, 200 metres and 4x400-metre relay in Sydney.
She had hoped for five gold medals but took bronze in the long jump and 4x100-metre relay, which still made her the first woman to win five medals in a single Olympics.
But the athlete was unable to take her form to Athens, returning empty-handed from the 2004 Games.
