Robredo had his chances in the match and made Federer look vulnerable with his solid grounstrokes and great court coverage.

Federer was broken twice in the first set before sealing it in 40 minutes and his unforced error count had risen to 22 by the middle of the second.

The world number one raised his game to take the tiebreak 7-2 and made an an early break in the third but Robredo struck back immediately before Federer broke him to seal victory on his second match point in two hours 20 minutes.
