Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton was refused bail and remanded in custody after he appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court on Friday charged with common assault and affray.

The 25-year-old had been arrested along with a 19-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman after an incident in the centre of Liverpool on Thursday morning.

Barton will remain in custody until a further hearing by video link on January 3, making him unavailable for Newcastle's Premier League fixtures against Chelsea on Saturday and Manchester City on Wednesday.

Barton joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Manchester City in June for a fee of 5.8 million pounds.
