Hamburg had keeper Sascha Kirschstein sent off in the 10th minute for a trip on Dutch forward Robin van Persie. They were doubly punished when Gilberto stepped up to score the ensuing spot kick two minutes later in the Group G game.
Arsenal took no pleasure in seeing another Champions League match spoiled by the early sending-off of a goalkeeper. They had lost last season's final against Barcelona after Jens Lehmann was red-carded in the 18th minute.
