Former England soccer international Paul Gascoigne, 39, was arrested in London on suspicion of assault, police sources said on Wednesday.
"Police were called at approximately 3:40 a.m. this morning by a man who alleged that he had been assaulted by another man at a club in South Kensington," Scotland Yard said in a statement.
"Following inquiries, a 39 year-old man was arrested at a separate club nearby at approx 4:15 a.m. on suspicion of ABH (Actual Bodily Harm)."
Gascoigne -- known as "Gazza" by millions of fans -- played 57 times for England. He has had several run-ins with the law since his football career went into decline in the late 1990s.
