India's Sonal Phadke outslugged Japan's Moe Kawatoko from the baseline to carve out a facile 6-2, 6-1 victory and move into the second stage of the qualifying rounds in the USD 10,000 ITF Women's Tennis Tournament in Mumbai on Saturday.
Also through to the second stage was Sonal's compatriot Liza Pereira who struggled to overcome wildcard Prachi Nadkarni, also from India, 7-5, 6-4 in another opening qualifying round tie.
Prachi stormed her way back into the clash after trailing 1-3 before Liza's experience stood her in good stead to subdue her determined opponent.
Another Indian Archana Venkataraman, seeded second in the qualifiers behind Sonal, overcame her sister Arti 6-3, 6-2 in another tie.
Fourth seed Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand, No. 6 Kazusa Ito of Japan, No. 13 Wei-Peng Lee of Singapore and No. 15 Cagla Buyukakcay of Turkmenistan advanced with fluent wins over Indian opponents.
The winner of the tournament is to get USD 1,568 and six points, while the runner-up would be richer by USD 980 and would also earn four points.
