Defending champions India went down 1-0 to Australia in the final of the women's hockey tournament at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne on Saturday.

The Australian eves thus remained undefeated in this tournament.

Australia captain Nicole Hudson shot in the solitary goal in the 62nd minute to help Australia claim gold in the event.

Kate Hollywood, Kobie McGurk and Madonna Blyth are three young players who have had outstanding tournaments and performed brilliantly in front of a home crowd.

In the bronze medal game, England defeated New Zealand in an epic encounter which went into two periods of extra time. The game was eventually decided in a penalty shoot-out, which England won 3-1.

The Australian men's team is also looking good to claim gold as they play Pakistan in the final on Sunday.
