Highlights:

  • Samaresh Jung wins fifth gold
  • Lifters Geeta Rani and Simple Kaur in one-two finish
  • Vivek Singh picks silver behind Jung
  • Elite Athlete with a Disability gets bronze in discus
  • Manavjit Singh takes bronze in men's trap shooting
  • Anju Bobby George enters final
  • Three more boxers in semi-finals, making it five in last four
  • Paddlers, Badminton players make good progress
  • India's tally at the Games: 16 gold, 11 silver, 7 bronze

Samaresh Jung continued to shoot down the targets like it is the easiest thing in the world. Scoring way ahead of the others, he added a fifth gold medal from the men's 10m Air Pistol to his overflowing kitty on Wednesday at the Commonwealth Games.

In six events thus far at the Games he has won five gold and a silver.

Vivek Singh grabbed the silver in the 10m Air Pistol to make it a one-two for India.

Jung, who has two gold and three silver from the 2002 Commonwealth Games, is sure to be the biggest medal grosser from these Games and probably the biggest in the 76-year history of the Games.

While still on shooting, Sanjeev Rajput in the men's 50m Rifle Prone and Manavjit Singh in added a bronze medal each in the Trap event.

Women weightlifters Geeta Rani and SImple Kaur Bhumrah made it yet another one-two for India, as they grabbed two medals in the over 75 kg category. India ended the weightlifting competition with three gold, four silver and one bronze.

Ranjith Jayaseelan, India's representative in discus throw for Elite Athletes with a Disability (EDA), added a bronze to the tally.

Commonwealth Games coverage

Anju Bobby George, India's main hope in athletics, qualified for the women's long jump final. She had a best jump of 6.41 metres. The final is on Friday.

The Indian men's hockey team however failed to make the semi-finals despite beating South Africa 2-0 in the league match.

With Malaysia keeping down its margin of defeat to just one goal against Pakistan, India were shut out of the last four on the higher number of goals scored. Pakistan won 6-5.

"Samaresh Jung's haul of gold medals is a record for India at any single Games. I can only remember P T Usha winning five gold medals back in the 1985 in an Asian Track and field meet. No other Indian has won five gold medals at a single international sports meet of this level for India. It is a monumental performance and there is more to come from this talented shorter," said Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi.

Jung was modest. "I'm not interested in the record or the gold. If I am shooting well then I am happy," he said.

"I was leading by a good margin, but anything can happen in the final. Some unwanted thoughts started coming in like 'suppose I don't shoot well.

"I just put that out of my mind and concentrated and things fell in place."
