The Generals in Germany

Marcello Lippi, Italy

He is sometimes called Paul Newman, because of his similar looks to the Hollywood actor. And he is one of Italy's best coaches ever, no mean feat in a country that is one of the cradles of the Football Civilisation.

Lippi, 58, is not considered one of the brilliant tacticians of the game. Instead, he is considered a brilliant motivator. Perhaps that is what Italy needs, having been held to a 1-1 draw by Bruce Arena's United States.

He is no stranger to resurrecting teams. He gave an impoverished Napoli new hope by getting them a UEFA Cup rank in 1993-1994. Then he gave Juventus a host of trophies, including the 1996 UEFA Champions League. The former Sampdoria defender has managed teams like Inter Milan, and before he took over the national team's reins in 2004, had given old club Juventus loads to cheer.

Now let's see if he can lift the Azurris to the glory days.
