Victory for Canna

His younger brother Paolo is a footballer and a defender too and plays for Naples. At one time Brothers Cannavaro played together for Parma.

Stars in the Stands

Fabio is married to Daniela, who is also from Naples, and has two sons Christian and Andrea and a daughter, Martina. The footballer apparently likes to cook and makes a mean pizza.

The 100-caps Cannavaro, who is known for his upbeat, laid-back Napoli manner, has represented Italy at three World Cups, as well the last two Euro Cups, including Euro 2000 where a stronger Italy shockingly lost to France in the final at Rotterdam.

His footballing style polled him 1,977 votes and he narrowly missed the Golden Ball (Zidane won it with 2,012 votes) picking up the Silver Ball.

Canna's hero -- he was dubbed Canna, says The Guardian, after a solid, dependable reed that bends but does not break -- was fellow Neopolitan and defender Ciro Ferrara. Incidentally, Ferrara was the technical advisor to the World Cup 2006 Italy squad.
