As the man who inspired dreams of a new French Revolution walked bitterly off, you could not but help wonder at the fine line that divides genius from madness.
No one can deny Zidane is one of the geniuses of football. And no one can deny what he did in Berlin -- in a final that promised him immortality and a swansong millions would die for -- was sheer madness.
A madness that denied him the opportunity to claim for the second time of his life the most coveted trophy in world football, and allowed him only to walk past it.
So near, and yet so far.
