Hsieh Su-wei spearheaded Taiwan to the Asian Games women's team tennis gold medal with a 2-1 victory over India in an absorbing final on Friday.

Hsieh and Chuang Chia-jung produced a masterly display in the deciding doubles to overcome Sania Mirza and Shikha Uberoi 7-6, 6-1 to clinch the lengthy tie which went on well past midnight.

Japan and Uzbekistan collected the bronze medals.

The final was postponed from Thursday and again halted earlier on Friday because of heavy rain which has lashed the Qatari capital in the last two days and badly upset the Games schedule.

The Taiwanese women kept their nerves despite hundreds of noisy Indian fans from among the large number of expatriates living in the tiny Gulf nation staying on to cheer their team.

Hsieh, 20, overcame Uberoi 6-2, 7-5 in the opening singles before Mirza restored parity by defeating 17-year-old Chan Yung-jan 6-2, 6-2.

Hsieh and Chuang hugged and jumped for joy in the end to silence the flag-waving Indian crowd carrying posters of Mirza, who has emerged a youth icon in her country since she became the first Indian woman to win a WTA event last year.
