Mohun Bagan edge past Air India 2-1

April 14, 2006 21:07 IST

Mohun Bagan kept themselves in title hunt by edging past Air India 2-1 in a 10th ONGC National Football League encounter in Kolkata on Friday.

Medio Mehtab Hussain and defender Eduardo Coelho struck the goals for Bagan, who now move up to 20 points from 13 matches. Napoleon Singh scored the lone goal for Air India, which remains on 12 points from 13 outings.

Bagan's first goal came in the 10th minute when Hussain found the mark with a rasping shot that gave no chance to Air India custodian Sundar Rajan.

An action-packed second half saw Singh convert a penalty to restore parity as he rammed the ball into the net to the right of Bagan goalkeeper Subrato Pal in the 71st minute.

The easiest of set pieces was given after Eduardo was pulled up for an illegal tackle on a rival player.

Eduardo regained Bagan's lead with a smashing header off a free kick in the 75th minute to make the scoreline 2-1.

Mohun Bagan, who dominated the proceedings throughout the game regaling the home crowd, got back into the running in the NFL after today's win.

The green and maroons are placed third in the league now. The airmen are still on the eighth position.
