Sony Di Kuuncoro of Indonesia and Wang Chen of Hong Kong won the men's and women's singles titles respectively in the Asian Badminton championship at the Gachibowli indoor stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday.

Sony defeated Kuan Beng Hong of Malaysia 15-10, 15-5 to win his third title while former champion Chen defeated Japan's Morei Kaori 11-8, 11-4 to regain honours after 2003.

In the men's doubles finals, Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia beat Lee Jae Jin and Jung Jae Sung of Korea 15-11, 15-7 while the Korean pair of Lee Kyung Won and Lee Hyo Jung retained the women's doubles title, trouncing Ogura Kumako and Shiota Reiko 15-13, 8-15, 15-5.

Sudek Prapakarnol and Sarajee of Thailand got the better of Lee Jae Jin and Lee Hyo Jing of Korea 15-11, 14-17, 15-10 to win the mixed doubles title.

Sony, who upset top seed NG Wei Hong Kong 15-3, 15-11 in the semi-finals, brushed aside the challenge of the second seed and took home the purse of US $10,000 after a power-packed game in which Kuan fumbled on many an occasion.

After initial hiccups, Sony rallied superbly to overtake the seeded Malaysian. He went on with his aggressive style to win the first game.

In the second game, Kuan made too many mistakes that helped Sony's cause while he had to be content with the runner-up tag and prize-money of US $6,000.

It was a lop-sided contest in women's singles as the second seed Wang Chen smashed her way to success over Mori.

The Japanese scored some good points in the first set but could not stand the might of seeded Hong Kong shuttler.

There was a semblance of fight in the first game with Mori trying to match point by point but the experienced player from Hong Kong made no mistake in the final stages and grabbed the opening game.

The second game came to the champion without much effort.
