M Suranjoy Singh stormed into the quarter-finals of the 48 kg category event by beating Volkov Vitaliy of Ukraine at the 13th Senior Men's World Boxing Championships in China on Wednesday.
Suranjoy, a bronze medallist at the Junior World Championships at Jeju, Korea, and a silver medallist at the SAF Games at Islamabad last year, held his nerve to get the better of Vitaliy by a 22-19 margin.
In the quarter-finals, Suranjoy will meet Dostiev Sherali of Tajikistan, who defeated Hoong Moo Won of Korea.
In the 54 kg category, India's Akhil Kumar lost to Kim Won Guk of Korea (17-39) while Som Bahadur Pun lost to S Mykola of Ukraine (19-31).
In the 69 kg category, Vijendar lost to Cuban E L Santoya.
